Belted Kingfisher

With its shaggy crest, oversized bill, and distinctive rattling call, the Belted Kingfisher is a familiar sight along Charleston’s waterways. These skilled hunters dive headfirst into the water to catch fish. Although present year-round in South Carolina, they are especially common along the Charleston coast during winter.

Where to look: Tidal creeks, marshes, ponds, and waterways throughout the Charleston area.

Part of my Birds of Charleston postcard series. Keep an eye out for the next one.
